Theres a special quality to mornings, a fresh beginning, a new dawn, the light returns and we’re given a new chance to start afresh.
Its like this for me in the new year, you turn the page of the old year, you can start again, fresh and new. For me that means lots of journaling has been going on, lots of setting my intentions for the new year, and thinking about my deep resolve, my Sankalpa for the year, which is to honour myself and my art process more deeply and to honour my own path with focus and momentum.
In short:- Honour my practice.
Meaning anytime I remember I’m off my own path I’ll get back on, I’ll make art, I’ll write, I’ll get back up when I get knocked down, but above all I’ll respect my own path as an artist.
As Beth Picken says so eloquently: “Your life I finite and you should make your art. Things will get in the way and you should still make your art. Return to your art, over and over again. You will find clarity and answers as you feed this vital part of yourself. You will fall away from a practice, and you are always invited to return to it in this moment, and this one, and this one. Your art is always waiting for you.”
Someone said to me last year, “What about your next life? Would you want to be an artist?” And it hit me like a ton of bricks. I suddenly knew without a shadow of a doubt that being an artist was my precious gift, one I wanted to honour and cherish in this life. I want to be worthy of my gifts, so my deep resolve this year is to honour my gifts and my practice.
HONOUR YOUR OWN PRACTICE IN 2026.
